School Council and Y6 Ambassadors

At Burnwood Community Primary School, our well-established school council (led by our Ambassadors) represent the views of all our pupils. It gives our pupils the opportunity to have their voices heard and be part of the whole school and wider local / national / global communities. They help to makes decisions about school life and organise projects that support learning and development, such as organising charity events, theme days or representing the school at outside events. 

We value the opinions of our pupils and our school council gives pupils a forum to share these opinions with our school council teacher representative, Headteacher and other members of staff.

Who are the School Council representatives?

A new school council is elected each year and is made up of 1 representative from each class from Year 3 to Year 5 and 2 pupils from each class in Year 6, who are also our Ambassadors. All school council representatives are elected by their peers at the beginning of each academic year and we meet at least twice each half term. We have our own notice board and Dojo class so that we can communicate effectively with each other and the wider school.

If you have any ideas or areas you want us to look at as your school council simply post them in our box or speak to your class representative. 

Our School Council aims to:

• Ensure that our vision, values and rules are reflected within the life of the school.
• Promote pupil voice and have an active role within the school community.
• Organise and  lead whole school and class events.
• Encourage each member to be an active leader for Local, National and Global change.
• Be effective in enabling equality for all.

Impact within our School

• We have received Wellbeing Leadership training with ‘Stay Well’.
• We work regularly with the NSPCC and have helped them to create interview questions for youth workers, create posters about who we should contact if we are worried about something. 
• We are currently working closely with the NSPCC to complete a Tuesday takeover session - where we talk about online safety issues. 
• We hold regular Burnwood's Got Talent competitions.
• We raise money for our school by running events such as 'RAGS 2 RICHES'. 

Impact Outside of School

• We have met with the Councillor to discuss his role and local actions for change.
• We have taken part in the Big Ambition survey.  This means that our thoughts and opinions will now be shared with the Government to help shape the future of Great Britain.
• Our Y6 Ambassadors have been responsible for making parking safer outside of school. They give out penalty notices and ask people to park in safer places. 
• We support Councillor Kallar in the annual 'Big Spring Clean' by completing a litter pick each year. 
• We raise awareness of local charities.
• Our RUGS (previous and current school council members) represent our school at all SOCIETAS events with children from other SOCIETAS schools. 

Certificates and Achievements 

Supporting Charities

The school council asked their peers to suggest local charities which we could support.  

The school council then voted on the charity which they wanted to support from Children in Need, a homeless charity 75% chose a homeless charity.

We completed our 'homeless appeal' and asked all our families to donate food items that could be cooked with a kettle in return our children could come into school in their own clothes for the day. Mrs Clifford took all of the items to Norton Community Church where they were warmly appreciated.
