Remote Education

Parent/Carers can use the suggested websites for learning at home. Pupils will be provided with a log in for those websites which require one. If you do not have this, please contact the school office. 

Introduction

At Burnwood, our priority is always for pupils to attend school and benefit from face‑to‑face teaching. However, there may be occasions where remote education is necessary to ensure continuity of learning when attendance is not possible.

This page explains when remote education will be provided, what pupils and parents can expect, and how we support all learners, including those with additional needs.

When Remote Education Will Be Provided

Remote education will only be used where attendance at school is not possible, but pupils are well enough to learn. This may include:

• Whole or partial school closure
• Individual pupils unable to attend school due to short‑term illness or medical needs
• Other exceptional circumstances where learning cannot take place on site

Remote education is not intended as a long‑term alternative to attending school and will be reviewed regularly.

What to Expect from Remote Education:

Learning Time

During periods of remote education, pupils will have access to live check‑ins with their class teacher. These sessions will be used to provide guidance, maintain routine, and support pupils’ wellbeing.

Remote learning activities will then be shared via the school website/dojo, and regular messages will be sent through Arbor/Dojo to keep parents and carers informed about learning expectations, updates, and any changes.

Curriculum and Teaching

Remote education will:

• Follow the school’s curriculum as closely as possible
• Include a combination of:
  • Live teaching where appropriate
  • Independent tasks and assignments
• Provide clear instructions and expectations for pupils

Teachers will provide feedback on work submitted and check pupils’ engagement.

How to Access Remote Education:

Online Platforms

We use the following platforms to deliver remote education:

• Microsoft Teams for live lessons
• Arbor for communication
• Class Dojo for task access

Access to Devices and Resources

We aim to ensure all pupils can access remote education.

Where a pupil does not have access to a suitable device or internet connection, the school may be able to:

• Loan a device for the duration of remote learning
• Provide paper‑based learning materials where appropriate

Support for Pupils with SEND

We recognise that remote education may present additional challenges for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Support may include:

• Adapted learning activities
• Regular contact with teaching staff or support staff
• Individualised resources where appropriate

Parents and carers of pupils with SEND are encouraged to contact their child’s class teacher to discuss specific arrangements.

Assessment, Feedback and Engagement

During periods of remote education:

• Teachers will check pupils’ engagement regularly
• Feedback will be provided on completed work
• Staff will contact families if concerns arise about participation or progress

Safeguarding and Online Safety

The school’s safeguarding and online safety policies apply to remote education as they do in school.

Pupils are expected to:

• Use online platforms appropriately
• Follow the school’s acceptable use and behaviour expectations

Parents and pupils should report any safeguarding concerns to: the safeguarding team (including Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mrs Wickham).
